Haveo · What to say at a networking event when you don't know anyone

How to join a group that is already talking

Approach a group of three or more, never a pair. Stand at the edge of the circle, wait for a pause rather than a gap in one sentence, and say "mind if I join you?" Most groups widen without breaking stride.

Pick the right group

Three or more. A pair is usually mid-conversation and there is no physical space in the shape they are standing in.

Look for a circle with a gap in it. People leave that gap without noticing, and it is an invitation whether or not anyone means it as one.

Stand there first

Move to the edge and face in. Do not say anything for a few seconds. This is normal and nobody finds it strange.

You will usually be absorbed without having to ask, because somebody will glance over and widen the circle.

If you do need words

"Mind if I join you?" is enough. So is "sorry, I heard you say [thing] — what happened in the end?"

The second one is better when you have actually heard something, because it gives them a reason to include you rather than just permission.

Then listen for a minute

Do not open with your own subject. Take the thread that is running and add to it.

The fastest way to be unwelcome in a group is to arrive and change the topic to yourself.

If it does not work

Occasionally a group is genuinely closed — two people solving something, or a conversation that was private. Say "sorry, carry on" and move. It is not about you and it costs nothing.

Common questions

Is it rude to interrupt?
Joining is not interrupting. Waiting for the end of a sentence rather than the end of a story is the whole difference.
What if they stop talking when I arrive?
They are making room, not shutting you out. Say who you are, or ask them to carry on — both restart it immediately.
Is a group better than one person?
One person is easier to start with and a group is easier to stay in. Early in a night, go for the person on their own.
