Haveo · ADHD at work

Telling your employer you have ADHD

You can usually get what you need without disclosing. Ask for the adjustment, not the accommodation — "send me that in writing" and "can we do this async" are working preferences nobody questions. Disclose when you need something a preference cannot get you.

This is not legal advice

What protection you have, and what an employer must do, depends entirely on your country and sometimes your contract. Nothing here is a statement about your rights.

What follows is the decision people describe making, and how they tend to make it.

The option most people miss

Most of what helps is a working preference, not a medical accommodation: written briefs, agendas in advance, a recorded meeting, a flexible start, a door that closes.

All of those can be asked for plainly, and in most teams they are granted without anyone asking why.

When disclosing is the way

When you need something a preference cannot reach — a formal adjustment, a change to how you are assessed, or protection you have to be on record to have.

Also when not saying it is costing you more than saying it would. Some people find the concealment more tiring than the reaction.

Who to tell, and when

People commonly tell a manager they already trust rather than HR first, and commonly after an offer rather than during hiring.

You can also tell one person and not the team. Disclosure is not all-or-nothing and it does not have to be permanent in scope.

How to say it

Short, forward-looking, with the thing you want attached: "I have ADHD. The practical effect is I lose detail in long verbal briefs, so written ones work much better for me."

Naming the effect and the fix in the same sentence is what turns it from a disclosure into a request.

Common questions

Will it be held against me?
Some people report it going well and some do not, and the difference is usually the manager rather than the company. That is worth weighing honestly rather than optimistically.
Do I have to tell them?
In most places, no, unless it affects safety-critical work. The specifics depend on your country — check a local source rather than this page.
What if I already struggled before telling them?
Naming it alongside what you are doing about it reframes the past rather than excusing it, and that is usually how it lands.
