Networking with ADHD

The hard parts are usually four: you interrupt, you lose the thread mid-sentence, you forget every name, and you never send the follow-up. Fix the follow-up first — it is the one that costs you something real, and it is solved by typing a name and one detail into your phone the second you walk away.

Interrupting

You are not being rude, you are offloading a thought before it disappears. That is a real constraint and it has a physical fix: put the thought somewhere else.

Type three words into your phone, or hold one finger against your leg. Saying "sorry, go on — I want to come back to something" also works, and most people read it as interest.

Losing the thread halfway through a sentence

Say so plainly. "I have completely lost where I was going with that" is a normal sentence that costs you nothing, and the other person almost always supplies the thread.

The alternative — talking on while searching for the point — is the thing that actually reads badly.

Names

Use it once immediately: "good to meet you, Priya." Then type it into your phone within a minute. Do not rely on repeating it in your head, because the next voice will take it.

If it is already gone, see the page on forgetting a name. Asking again on the same night is completely ordinary.

Set an end time before you arrive

Hyperfocus and a crash both live in the same evening. Deciding when you leave, before you are inside, is what stops the night ending on whichever one arrives first.

Common questions

Is it better to go early or late?
Early. A half-empty room is quieter, conversations start without you having to break into anything, and the people who arrive early are usually the ones who also find this hard.
What if I talk too much?
Ask a question roughly every third thing you say. It is a mechanical rule rather than a personality change, which is why it works when you are not monitoring yourself.
Does medication timing matter?
That is a question for whoever prescribes it, not for us. What we can say is that people who plan the evening around their own predictable crash report an easier night than people who plan around the event's schedule.
