Haveo · Networking for introverts

How many people should you talk to?

Two or three real conversations is a good night. Counting introductions measures the wrong thing — one person who remembers a real conversation with you is worth more than twenty who half-recall your name, and the twenty is the harder evening.

Why more is not better

The value of an event is the people who would recognize your name next month. That number is almost never improved by circulating faster.

Twenty introductions produces twenty people who cannot say what you do. That is not a network, it is an evening.

What a real conversation looks like

Long enough that you both said something specific about your actual work. Usually five to fifteen minutes.

You should be able to write one line about them afterwards that is not on their LinkedIn. That is the test.

Set the number before you go

"Two real conversations and I can leave" is a goal you can finish. Finishing it is what lets you stop, and stopping is what makes it repeatable.

An open-ended evening has no success condition, so it always ends in the feeling that you should have done more.

If you get one

One good conversation is still a good night. The events people remember as worthwhile almost always turn out to have been one conversation, not eight.

Common questions

What if my job requires collecting contacts?
Then the number is set for you, and the honest approach is different: short, purposeful, and a note on every one. Just do not confuse that with building a network.
Is it bad to stay with one person all night?
Only if you both wanted to move and neither did. If it is a genuinely good conversation, that is the outcome you came for.
How do I know if it counted?
You can name one specific thing they told you. If you cannot, it was an introduction.
