Haveo · How to prepare for a networking event when you have social anxiety

How to leave a networking event early

Leave when you have done the thing you came to do, not when the room empties. You do not need to announce it or say goodbye to everyone — finish your current conversation properly, thank whoever invited you if they are nearby, and go.

You are allowed to go

Nobody is tracking your arrival and departure. The organizer is counting heads at the start, not the end.

An hour spent in two real conversations is a better night than three hours of standing near the wall, and it is the version you will agree to repeat.

End the last conversation properly

Do not drift toward the exit mid-sentence. Close it: "I'm going to head off — it was good to meet you." Then leave.

A clean ending is what the other person remembers. A vanishing is what they notice.

Whether to find the host

If they are nearby and free, thirty seconds is a kindness and they will remember you came. If they are mid-conversation across the room, do not cross it.

A short message the next day covers it completely.

Set the time before you arrive

This is the whole trick. "I'll leave at eight" decided at six is a plan; decided at half past seven it is an escape, and it feels like one afterwards.

Leaving at a planned time having done the thing is a night that worked. That framing is what makes the next invitation answerable.

Common questions

What if someone asks why I'm leaving?
"I've got an early start" is true often enough and nobody follows up. You also do not have to give a reason at all.
Is it rude to leave before the talks?
Check the running order when you arrive. If the content is the reason you came, stay for it; if the room is the reason, the talks are the natural moment to go.
How early is too early?
If you have had one real conversation, you have got something out of it. Twenty minutes and nobody spoken to is worth pushing through — that is usually the doorway, not the event.
