Haveo · Dyslexia at work

Asking for what you need at work with dyslexia

Ask for one specific thing with the benefit attached. "Documents the day before — I will come to the meeting with the answer rather than reading in it" gets agreed far more often than a general request, because it tells your manager what to do and what they get.

What people ask for

Documents and agendas in advance, not being asked to read aloud without warning, extra time on written tasks, text-to-speech and dictation software, and a screen and font you can change.

Instructions in writing rather than verbally, or verbally rather than in writing — people differ, and yours is the one that counts.

One request, with the benefit

"If I get the deck the day before, I will come with comments instead of reading it in the room." That is a business case and it is easy to say yes to.

A list of six reads as a problem to manage. One reads as someone managing themselves.

You usually do not have to say why

Most of these are preferences plenty of people have. "That works much better for me" is a complete answer and it is rarely questioned.

Confirm it in writing

One line by email after the conversation. It survives a change of manager, and it means you are not renegotiating it in six months.

If it is refused

Ask what would make it workable, and propose a trial rather than a permanent change. A month-long experiment gets agreed when a policy change does not.

If it stays no on something that genuinely matters, that tells you about the job rather than about you.

Common questions

Do I need a formal diagnosis?
Not for a working preference. For a formal adjustment it depends on your country and employer — check a local source.
Is software expensive?
Text-to-speech and dictation are built into every major operating system and cost nothing. Start there before asking for a budget.
What if my manager does not understand dyslexia?
Do not explain dyslexia. Explain the specific thing you want and what it produces — that conversation does not require them to understand anything.
