Haveo · Networking when you need a job

How to network on LinkedIn

Three things, in this order: make your profile say what you actually do, comment usefully where your field talks, and send few specific messages. Most people do only the third, which is why it does not work for them.

First, be findable and legible

Your headline should say what you do, not your job title. "I build booking systems for clinics" is searchable and human; "Senior Engineer II" is neither.

The About section is the one people read before deciding whether to reply to you. Three short paragraphs in plain words beats a list of technologies.

Second, be useful in public

A specific, helpful comment on someone's post is read by their whole audience and costs you two minutes. It is by far the highest return per unit of effort on the platform.

Posting your own work is better but slower. Commenting well for a month is the cheapest way to become a name people recognize.

Third, and only third, message people

Few and specific. One line proving you know their work, one line on you, one question they can answer quickly.

The order matters: a message from someone whose comments they have seen is a different object from a message out of nowhere.

What to stop doing

Connection requests with no note, automated anything, asking to "pick your brain", congratulating strangers on work anniversaries.

All of them are volume tactics, and volume is what trained everyone to ignore this kind of message in the first place.

It compounds slowly

Nothing happens for two months and then people start replying because they half recognize you. That lag is normal and it is the reason most people quit at week three.

Common questions

Do I have to post?
No. Commenting well does most of the work and takes a fraction of the effort. Posting accelerates it.
How often?
Consistently rather than often. A few comments a week for a year beats a burst of daily activity for a month.
Is a premium account worth it?
For most people no. The free account does everything described here.
