Getting through a multi-day conference

Plan the days like a budget, not a schedule. Pick two things per day and protect a real gap between them — the people who get the most out of a conference attend fewer sessions, not more, and spend the difference in the hallway.

The hallway is the conference

Almost every talk will be online within a month. The conversations will not be.

So skipping a session to keep talking to someone is not slacking, it is the correct trade. Plan to do it.

Two things a day

One session you genuinely want, and one social thing. Everything else is optional and treating it that way is what makes day three survivable.

Put a real gap between them. Not a gap you will fill — an empty one, in your room or outside.

Day three is the one that breaks people

Energy does not reset overnight at a conference. Plan day three as the lightest day, not the one where you finally catch up on everything you missed.

The last-night dinner is usually the best social value of the whole event. Protect the capacity for it.

Go to the small things

Workshops, birds-of-a-feather sessions, anything with twelve people and a shared task. You will meet more people there than at any evening reception.

A structured activity supplies the conversation, which removes the part that costs you most.

Book one thing in advance

One coffee with one specific person, arranged before you travel. It gives the trip a guaranteed outcome and takes the pressure off every other interaction.

Common questions

Should I go to the parties?
Pick one. Going to all of them is how day three disappears, and they are largely interchangeable.
What if my employer sent me?
Nobody is counting sessions. Come back with two useful contacts and a clear summary and you have done more than most attendees.
Is it worth staying in the venue hotel?
Usually yes — being able to go upstairs for twenty minutes is worth more than the cheaper room twenty minutes away.
